We stayed in Double Tree by Hilton, Almaty.

Day 1 — Arrival & gentle city intro

Morning / Arrival

  • Arrive at Almaty (ALA). Transfer to hotel — check in & unpack.
  • Lunch at the hotel restaurant — keep it simple first day
  • 1.5–2 hour nap / quiet time in the room (set blackout blinds + familiar toy).

Late afternoon / Early evening

  • Panfilov Park + Ascension (Zenkov) Cathedral — short stroll, colorful cathedral kids love. This is a low-effort, iconic first walk
  • Family restaurant near the hotel (see suggestions below)

Why this day worked: short travel fatigue recovery + 1 easy outdoor stop to acclimatize.

Day 2 — Medeu + Shymbulak (mountain + cable car day)

Morning

  • Head to Medeu Ice Rink (scenic canyon area). Quick photo stop — the open space is kids-friendly for short runs
  • From Medeu take the cable car up to Shymbulak for mountain views. At the top there are cafes & short walks. (Take child carrier or stroller that folds for cable car)

Lunch

  • Cafe at Shymbulak or return to Medeu picnic style — keep lunches simple and child-friendly (sandwiches / soup)
  • Return to hotel for quiet time & nap (90–120 minutes)

Dinner

  • Restaurant near hotel — order favourites from kid’s comfort menu.

Why this day works: big outdoors morning (fresh air, views) + long rest in warmer, lower elevation in the afternoon.

Day 3 — Big Almaty Lake + relax

  • Big Almaty Lake (scenic, turquoise lake about 30–45 min drive). Short family walk and photos —kids usually loves the open space and picnic vibes. (Pack warm layer — higher elevation is cooler.)
  • Hotel nap / downtime.
  • A calm splash for 30–45 min (post-nap) works wonders.

Evening

  • Kok Tobe Hill (cable car & small amusement / kids’ area) for sunset & city view — short rides & cafes there are kid-friendly. We enjoyed the view while our kids enjoyed the small rides

Dinner

  • Try a family-friendly restaurant near Kok Tobe or back in town. Recommendation below

Why this day works: a scenic morning and gentle evening activity, with long afternoon rest to recharge.

Day 4 — City culture + Green Bazaar + Arasan Baths or Children’s Museum

Morning

  • Green Bazaar (fresh fruit, dried fruit, local snacks) — fun sensory experience for kids. Very short visit (30–45 min)
  • 28 Panfilov Heroes Park (if you missed earlier) + small playground time

Lunch

  • Gakku  (authentic food) — many restaurants are family-welcoming (see restaurant list)

Late afternoon / Early evening

  • Short cultural stop: Central State Museum (30–45 min) and indoor children’s science / play museum (if available) — low intensity, educational
  • Try a relaxed spot: Six Coffee + Wine for an upscale yet welcoming environment (has good daytime family vibe, brunch; check evening suitability with child)

Why this day works: culture + market experience with big afternoon rest and low-key evening.

Day 5 — Easy morning + departure

Morning

  • Slow breakfast, last-minute souvenir grab (small toys, dried fruit from Green Bazaar), short city walk if time
  • Hotel checkout & transfer to airport.

Kid-friendly restaurants & cafés (good for lunches/dinners)

  • Gakku — authentic Kazakh dishes; family-friendly portions & tastes
  • Daredzhani (Georgian) — friendly, hearty food kids like (bread, cheese, grilled items). (Seen in family restaurants list)
  • Six Coffee + Wine — stylish, good daytime brunch options (kid-friendly at lunchtime) and pretty interiors for photos
  • Local cafés near Panfilov Park for snacks & fruit stalls at Green Bazaar (great for fresh juices & local treats)

Packing list (family of 3, December notes included)

Documents & basics

  • Passports + visas (if needed) + printed hotel/reservation confirmations
  • Travel insurance that covers child & medical care
  • Copies of ID & emergency contacts

For the child

  • Small blanket + favourite toy / comforter
  • Lightweight travel stroller (foldable) + baby carrier for mountain walks
  • Day backpack with snacks (dry biscuits, cereals), spill-proof water bottle
  • Extra diapers/wipes (if used), change of clothes for each day
  • Child paracetamol/ibuprofen (age-appropriate) + thermometer + any prescription meds
  • Sunhat + sunglasses (for high altitude/days) and warm hat + thermal layer (if traveling in winter)

Clothing

  • Layering is key: base layer (thermal tee), warm fleece/sweater, windproof jacket (mountain mornings can be chilly), comfortable walking shoes + spare socks. (If visiting in December, pack warmer — see weather note.)

Tech & convenience

  • Universal travel adaptor, power bank, phone + camera, portable stroller rain cover
  • Reusable wet bag for messy clothes, zip bags for small items

Best time to visit — short note

  • Best months: late spring (Apr–May) and early autumn (Sep–Oct) for mild weather and ideal outdoor conditions
  • Summer (Jun–Aug) is pleasant for outdoor activities
  • Winter (December) is cold and if you like snow/scenery it can be beautiful, but expect sub-zero temps at higher elevations; some mountain activities may be winter-specific.
  • Choose December only if you’re prepared for winter gear and shorter daylight. We went in December

Budget estimate (family of 3 — example from Delhi) — 5 days / 4 nights

A. Flights (Delhi ⇄ Almaty)

  • Typical economy round-trip fares (recent searches): USD $230–$350 / ~₹18k–₹28k per person (book early for best rates). For family of 3: ₹55k–₹85k approx.

B. Hotels (4 nights)

  • Budget / midrange: Hotel Kazakhstan / similar — ₹4k–8k / night → 4 nights ≈ ₹16k–32k
  • Mid-luxury: DoubleTree / similar — ₹8k–15k / night → 4 nights ≈ ₹32k–60k
  • Luxury: Rixos / 5★ — ₹15k–30k / night → 4 nights ≈ ₹60k–1.2L.

C. Food & local transport & activities

  • Food & snacks: ₹1.5k–2.5k / day (family) → 5 days ≈ ₹7.5k–12.5k
  • Transfers, taxis, cable car tickets, entry fees & minor activities: ₹10k–25k depending on attraction choices (Medeu/Shymbulak cable car, Kok Tobe cable car, Big Almaty Lake transfer)

Estimated total (5 days, 3 people)

  • Budget/midrange trip (flights + midrange hotel + activities): ~₹1.05L – ₹1.6L total.
  • Comfortable mid-luxury family trip: ~₹1.4L – ₹2.4L depending on hotel class & activity choices.

Location-specific mom tips:

  1. Stroller + carrier: Baby carrier works better with younger kids for cable cars / crowded bazaar areas
  2. Afternoon naps are gold: schedule a quiet hotel rest 1.5–2 hours daily — we built our around that
  3. Snack stash: carry favourite snacks & familiar small toys — local snacks are fun but kids prefer staples; Green Bazaar is great for fresh fruit if the kid likes it
  4. Altitude & chill: mountain spots (Big Almaty Lake, Shymbulak) are cooler — bring a warm layer and limit time if the kid feels off (short visits are best)
  5. Medical basics: note where the nearest pharmacy and hospital to your hotel are (ask hotel concierge on arrival). Keep child’s regular meds handy
  6. Book cable cars / popular slots in advance: weekends & holidays get busy for Medeu/Shymbulak & Kok Tobe. Booking helps avoid long lines with a kid
  7. Language & currency: Russian/Kazakh are common — basic “please/thank you” in Russian helps (спасибо = thank you). Local currency is KZT — hotels accept cards but keep cash for small markets
  8. Kid-friendly dining times: locals dine later; pick early seating (6–7pm) for the restaurant to suit kid's schedules
